Need help with break in brake line.

Here is a picture of the brake line. The hose goes to the master cylinder and the metal line to the brakes through the frame, that much I get. What goes in between? Is it a quick disconnect? If so for what purpose? Is it a shutoff valve for disabling when backing up? All of the one that I looked at in the boat storage yard had the line going directly to the master cylinder.

are the insides of the rubber hose a mirror image of the metal tubing connection....if so ....i suspect that the rubber hose end is like the one on a lot of autos ...it fits in to a hole or bracket if you will and is secured with a u shaped retainer clip ...you may find that on most autos on the frame end of the hoses....although as you asked was there a shut off valve for reverse....dont think so but i do like the concept it would make backing so much easyer.......

Frank, I'm lost, what do you mean by "goes in between". In between what?

In the picture it looks like the rubber line would connect to that fitting.

There are often valve assemblies that can connect into the line that then are hooked up to the backup lights and when they go on the solenoid in the valve will close off the line so the brakes don't apply,

Woodster is right. The flex hose should be inserted into a bracket and retained with a clip. This is to prevent vibration and wear on the hard line that gets threaded into the end.
Depending on the fitting at the master cylinder, you could run hard line directly to it. Just make sure the master cylinder is NOT part if the mechanism that moves.

I suspect that is why they have the rubber hose connected to the master cyl.

Adjustable trailer length.

Some higher end trailers are adjustable in length to fit different size boats, if so the flex hose located somewhere in the line allows for this without having to redo the steel brake line for the adjustment.

This may come in handy if I need to add a tongue extention.

Frank, there are quick disconnects available for brake lines, not cheap, but I suspect your master is probably frozen and someone disconnected the line after it applied the brakes and wouldn't release in order to move the trailer. with the line having been disconnected like that for who knows how long, I would change the mcyl, wheel cyls, rubber hoses, and look long and hard at the hard lines.

Oh, yeah, I have a vacuum bleeder you can borrow if you need one.

Great thanks Timo42 I usually run a tube from the bleeder nipple to the bottom of a coke bottle and pump until no air comes out. A pump would be most appreciated.

Here is a site that will tell you more than you want to know.

In the day BL (Before Lawyers) the only way to back up a hill or through a dich was to pin the slider but because some fool forgot to un pin the actuator and crashed into someone------.

I guessing your trailer is old and has this pin hole and you are smater than the average bear, use it. Remember to pull the pin for towing.

Do be sure to pull foward as your last movement (even it backing into a slot) it will make your brakes work way longer.

Thanks time, I don't recall a hole. Trailer guy told me to jst jam st in there when backing up.

Thanks Stroh. I haven't figured out what I'm going to do with that yet. I took apart the hitch to check the master cylinder. I also took apart one of the wheels that had a clanking sound and sure enough found a broken spring and the adjustable spreader that no longer looks like it once did.

That disconnect is pretty neat. I've never seen those for brake lines. I might have another use for one........

....I forgot about that. Saw it on your site awhile back. Very cool. Looks like that disc brake/bearing mount floats for and aft.......? I assume you use a drag chute also? I have had one of those save my bacon once:eek:
