1984 H31 First wheel boat I've owned. Notice in the picture, there is a threaded hole which looks to be where a friction knob once was. Am I correct? There is some sort of plastic threaded bushing in it which has deteriorated. Could someone tell me what parts I need (and source) to re-new this. Thanks much.....Gary

Here's a look at the knob.

The correct name for the device is a 'brake'. Your wheel is made by Merriman. Don't write that down. They are long gone but this site has a retrofit new model that gets good comments. Oh, why that brake wasn't standard equipment is probably the reason companies like Merriman fail. Some parts are vital.

Did not necessarily come with a wheel brake.

Gary: I do not think that they all came with a wheel brake. There was/is someone that sells them on this site. It is a couple hundred dollars for the parts.

Wheel Brake

Someone started making the Merriman brake parts after a reverse engineering effort and they were actually sold on this site at one time. Seems about eight years ago the brake parts were over $200 so I sprung for the auto pilot and never regretted it.

So much for that....

Sheesh! 200 bucks? I assumed it was a simple matter of replacing the knob. I have a ST5000 auto pilot which I've never been able to check out because I'm missing the wheel ring. I'll focus on the auto pilot instead. Thanks for the help... Anybody have parts for sale?

Gear for Sale

In the Gear for Sale drop down there is a Merriman pedistal that is being sold for parts. You might give him a try.

Gary, I thought the 5000 was a below deck pilot.

It doesn't use a ring on the wheel. Have you tried it? It might be installed and working. P.S. Never mind! I just looked closer at your setup. The wheel AP parts are partially installed. You probably have a 4000 or a 3000. Have you looked in all your lockers yet?

No, I'm pretty sure it's a 5000

This has been puzzling me for some time. I admit that I know nothing about an auto pilot system. All the wiring looks OK in the lazerette, complete with a little "autohelm" black module with a bunch of little wires connected to it. The system powers up and displays an incorrect compass reading. If there is no wheel ring, where is the steering mechanism? Thanks

Ooops, pardon me Fred

It is a ST4000 (thanks for the link Monty), just downloaded a manual. If anyone knows where I could find a wheel ring for this model, please let me know. This whole system intimidates me. Infamiliarity breeds fear. Guess I'll start reading......Gary

If this is an Edson steering system, Edson can help you a lot. Go to www.edson.com

Here's a link

I think you can use the new MK2 drive. This is the first link I could find on Google. E-bay stores usually has lots but I don't see any today. I think E12093 is what you would need. I just installed the whole ST4000MK2 on my H320. REALLY neat... it's great sitting back and having it steer the boat. Gary

Wheel Brake

Gary, Funny, I was going to post the same question today. I take it you are looking for a wheel brake for this old pedestal model, probably a Merriman, which is what I have. Does anyone know where I can find one, or the plans of how it is made, I do have access to a machine shop if someone could please tell me how it is constructed. Gary, if you find a site or any info could you please pass it along. Maybe we can help each other out. Thanks to all. Jed
