...first time posting photos...

My '82 H30 came (to me) with an older Hood Seafurl 2 RF
'Bout Time 116.jpg

Problem is the foil slice piece closest to the rolller unit is broken on the upper end

I emailed photos to and conversed with the nice lady at Hood but she could not identify the splice piece since mine is quite different than the one she is familiar with on the older SF2 models such as mine.

As you can see in the photo, mine has two set screws that seem to hold the splice piece above the joint and two set screws that hold it below the joint

Can anyone say for certain this splice piece is an original Hood product or is it possibly a PO mod from another company?

Why is it so different than what is depicted in the older SF2 owners manual?

Is there a supplier or fix to r/r this broken splice piece?

Any info and ideas are appreciated, thanks!

Just as I am considering one of the older Hood furlers too! In the picture with the break, if you loosen/remove the upper set screw will the rest of the splice fall out? Then could you have it welded?

I think it is a metal stick that screws to each of the sections of foils. you may try to reach hood or a sail loft.

That sounds like a pretty good idea Ed. On mine Reefer suggested just using half of the splicer/bearing and using a rivet or set screw to hold in place. Welding a section or two together would not be problematic. Some jackass broke half of mine.
Thanks,
Frank

Looks like I'll take it apart and see where that leads. Sounds like welding would be a good option if it works. Hood couldn't offer any ideas but they did offer large discount on a new RF.

A 3" to 4" piece of hard white plastic also fell out of the break area - I guess that it might be some sort of "bearing shim" to prevent friction wear against the forestay...?

Thanks

According to Reefer which uses a similar system the plastic bearings are not needed.

caguy - (or anyone....)

Is it possible, probable or likely that I have a Hood RF drum and a foil and foil splice piece from Reefer (I don't know that company...)?

I sent photos to Hood and they could "neither confirm nor deny" the identity of my splice piece - it was not like any from Hood they were familiar with...

Does anyone have a good guess who manufactored my splice piece?

I've never done/or had done any metal work...could a machine shop reproduce/remanufactor a replacement foil splice piece identical to my broken one?

If you have any left I would take it to any welder and weld up what ever joints you don't have them for. As mentioned earlier you can get away with using half of a torque length. Before the welding suggestion I considered moulding them from resin and glass.
