Need Help from H33 Owners

I am the third owner of a '79 H33. I have heard that just forward of the head on the starboard side above the built-in drawers is a pilot berth in the original design. In my boat, a previous owner remodeled so that it is now a shelf over the drawers with a cabinet with stained glass doors (well, thanks to my golden retriever, it is now a stained glass door and an opening where a stained glass panel used to be). Did this really used to be a pilot berth? If so, does anyone have pictures of what it looks like they could post or send me so I can reconstruct it? I need the extra bunk space more than a cabinet. Thanks.

79 H33 bunk space

Tom, I just looked at the plan for the H 33 on this site and it does seem to indicate a bunk space for the area you describe. In fact, the existing starboard bunk does not even seem to be indicated as a bunk in that plan. If the space above the drawers was used for a bunk though, it would have to be for some kind of unclaustrophobic acrobatic midget becuause it is awfully high, narrow and the deck is awfully close, especially with a mattress added. On my 79 H33, the leeboard under the port main cabin bunk cushion will fold out horizontal, there are fittings to hold it there and the back cushions nicely fill in this space to make a wide port bunk. It would have to be for children though unless the light plywood leeboard is reinforced or otherwise supported.

1981 H33 has a pilot berth

I will try to get a few shots of the pilot berth with the difital camera when I visit Liberty today. What's your e-mail address? Ken Palmer, S/V Liberty kpalmer@rochester.rr.com http://www.LakeOntarioSailing.com

Pilot berth/shelf

Tom; Can you post pictures of the shelf arrangement on your 33? Better yet, UPS the pull-out pieces to me so I can complete my plans to convert the pilot berth into a useful storage area. I have not had one person on the boat who was willing to even climb into the berth to check it's size. Not even the 7 year old.

pilot berth/shelf

the original pilot berth is very close to the deck and it is narrow. But, at six feet, I have slept in it and it wasn't too bad...until I woke up, sat up (just a bit!) and cracked my forehead on the overhead. About ten years ago, I converted it to a shelf by simply screwing a nice teak board across the dip in the opening, and removing the cushion. It doubles as a bookshelf and general catchall. The port settee with the lee board down does support two active adults....and with the leeboard up is a great bunk in a rolly anchorage. The seat-back for the starboard settee berth acts as a fill for the quarter berth making a very nice single (the longest berth in the boat) or a very cozy double. On one memorable occasion, I had six people sleep on the boat, using every berth including the pilot berth. Never again...too many people! On hot nights, the best berth is the foredeck where, with just a few cushions on the cabin front and one over the bow cleat, a six footer can sleep relatively comfortably.

Thanks to All

Thanks to all for the advice and assistance. In fact, I need the berth space for a child, so I'm not too worried about giving him enough head room. Sam, next time I get to the boat I'll take a couple of photos for you. Whoever did the work did a decent job. If I get around to this project this winter (other priorities abound), the pieces are yours. Tom

Hey, Ken

I just checked out the pics. They were very helpful. Is that the original interior fabric on yours? It's a whole lot nicer than the stuff we live with. Tom

Original fabric (I believe)

I bought the 1981 H33 four years ago. I think the fabric is original, and looks like 1980's era. This winter we plan on replacing the settee cushions. Ken Palmer S/V Liberty
