Hi there I have a 1971 Cat 22 swing keel. I have had it for 2 years now and have not serviced the winchs as I have no idea who made them or about repair parts . So I have taken the posture if it isn't broken don't touch it. So can anyone help me with who made this particualr style winch it has no markings names ect on the outside and i have been afraid of taking it off. ( I do not want to replace it today.) The winch has a slot on the top for the winch handle and a large slot screw that i believe holds the winch barrel on. Thanks Herb

Winch comment...

I recognize the winch but for the life of me can't remember the brand. Whatever it is I believe that type is out of production, making the service parts fairly costly, if you can find them. I was by Minney's today and they had a bunch of those things for about $15 a piece, maybe they might be able to help. However, I don't think it's worth the cost of rebuilding them. My suggestion.... Replace 'em! For the C22 a pair of #6's would be more than adequate. Sailnet.com sells the beautiful Anderson #6 for $99! Anderson's are top rated by "Practical Sailor". Sailnet sells Harken and Lewmare at similar discounts and they offer free shipping. Follow the related link: then compare. Some other online suppliers are Defender.com and Pyacht.com.... You won't save any money at West Marine. I'm pissed at them anyway for buying out their main competitor, Boat U.S. The clerk I talked to today at West Marine said they were already raising prices with the ink on the merger not even dry yet! Big Brother.

Clean and Grease?

If your winches still turn and don't slip back when they aren't supposed to, you might want to take them apart, clean all the parts with a grease cutting solvent, then lightly grease all moving places with a waterproof grease. Those old winches on our old C22's are quite simple inside. They are not indestructable though as the brass parts do wear under use and abuse. Dick

thanks Dick and Joe

Thanks guys for the input. I have elected to take an active postion and have taken one winch apart and found that it is not that bad. The needle bearings and springs are a simple design and it actually went back together and worked. I have ordered grease and oil for them and will service them when it comes. So they will sail atleast one more year. But I would still love to know if anyone knows who made them as I hate not knowing something like that about my boat. So if you have a clue please let me know
