I'm a little confused. I'm located near Annapolis on the Chesapeake. I painted the bottom of my boat two springs ago with the ablative paint I purchased from WM. When I did that I sanded it down first. I will be doing it again in March/April. Reading some of the posts in the archives it appears some owners don't sand before painting if they are painting over an ablative paint. Is this correct? Is it OK to do it this way? Thanks, Joe Mullee

read the directions !

Directions say you need to power wash or a very light sanding when recoating. Can't go wrong with mfg directions !

Very little sanding, if any

Unlike modified epoxies, ablative paints gradually dissolve away...kind of like a bar of soap. As long as the new paint is the same as the old, you should be able to paint right over it. Pressure washing or light sanding is recommended first to remove any algae or marine plant growth. Not having to sand is a big part of the reason why ablatives have become so popular.
