I'm getting back into sailing (San Francisco Bay) after a 20 year hiatus and have been told that a hand held GPS can be used to learn boat speed and water depth rather than needing a knot meter and depth sounder. Can anyone confirm that information and recommend a GPS brand and model. I'm not looking for the most exotic, just a reliable one.
