I have completely restored my Cal 34 series I. New engine, shaft, folding prop. New Awlgip outside and inside, new varnish, wiring, everything is new. I'm now in the process of replacing all the standing and running rigging. It has a rectangle shaped backstay tensioner that has pop out handles, which allows the tension to be loosend on the rig after sailing, or the tightening of the rig if need be when sailing. It's probably been on there for years, so I think I should replace it since the rest of the rigging is new. Harken has a sleek new model, but of course they want $850 for it. Anybody know of another good, less expensive make? All suggestions appreciated, thanks.

here are some ideas....

Give the guys at APS a call...they will hook you up. Cost wise... I like the cascading type adjuster with the split backstay. http://www.apsltd.com/Tree/d36000/e33113.asp

Don't Buy A Wichard Adjuster

I have a Wichard manual adjuster on my backstay that has a simple broken part. Four times I've called Wichard USA for the part and four times the guy has lied to me about shipping one. I've offered to pay for it but four times he has agreed to ship it for free because "we don't sell replacement parts!" So don't buy a Wichard adjuster-they don't have time to give service after the sell. They are not helpful at all.

So in other words, Dick...

...your beef is with a company rep and not the item itself? I had a Wichard and it worked fine. Never a problem. Cheers, Bob

Beef with Wichard

No, my beef is with any company that doesn't sell replacement parts for its products. I've solved my Wichard problem by machining my own replacement. When and if I have to replace this one it won't be with a Wichard....and the guy I was talking with wasn't a rep...he works for Wichard. Would you buy a car that you couldn't get replacement parts for?
