Just bought a 1980 Hunter 33 and the galley stove is missing. Does anyone have one to sell or know where I could get a used one? Are there any scrapyards I could check? Please email me with any ideas...I don't get to check the message board that often. Thanks, Ron Karolyi

Stove Alternatives?

Hey Ron, My 1980 Hunter 33 still has the original two burner Kenyon stove with oven. It is a pressure alcohol stove and can be troblesome if not properly serviced. Once past the learning curve of these stoves they are OK. You might want to seek advice for suitable replacements and thier pros and cons. Steve

My experience

I also own a 1980 H33, and the original Kenyon 2 burner pressure alcohol range/oven was intact, although it had not been used much. I rebuilt both burners and the oven burner using rebuild kits from Kenyon. The stovetop worked fine, but the oven never got above 250 degrees. So I rebuit it again with the same result. I called Kenyon to see what I could possibly be doing wrong and was told that 250 was about the hottest that oven would get, and it was "more of a convenience item" than anything. I decided to remove the whole thing, and built a shelf at counter level. At the dock we use a two burner electric hotplate, and while cruising we remove this and replace it with a two burner Origo alcohol stove. I built a small microwave in under the shelf for use while tied to the shore power. Just some food for thought.

I like Mark's idea!

Ron: I like Marks idea too. We have had a couple of cabinets made from H&L Marine (Rancho Domiguez, CA). You give them the measurements and they make up a drawing. You recheck your measurements and they mfg it and ship it to you. You could then use one of the Origo units on top of a cabinet. If you will using the stove while underway Origo also have gimbled units.

Another Replacement Idea

You could build a gimballed shelf then put a Kenyon one or two-burner butane cartridge stove on the gimballed shelf when needed. Actually, you could leave it there all the time and build a cover for it that would double as a cutting board. No oven solution here, but I personally don't use the oven that much. I too, will be replacing the stove/oven (eventually) and replacing with shelves on an H31. I love the little Kenyon, it boils 10 cups of coffee in 3 minutes. Better than LP IMHO, no tanks, no lines, no sniffers, no solenoid, no refill problems, no corrosion problems, less storage problems. Not as good as LP: No oven. Better than CNG: See LP above. Not as good as CNG: No oven. Hmmmm....does Kenyon make a butane cartridge oven? Now there's an idea. Regular gimballed stove and oven with two butane cartridges, one for stove and one for oven. Does this exist? If not, I'm calling Kenyon; or better yet, maybe I could build the dang thang. Overall disadvantages: Butane cartridges require storage. You can store approximately 20 cans in the same space as one 20# LP tank and it lasts longer. Oh, shucks, that was supposed to be a disadvantage. You can store 6 cans in the same space as a one gallon container of alcohol. If the fire goes out in the middle of cooking, you will have to replace the cartridge which takes almost 5 seconds, then relight by turning the knob. Did I mention I love my little Kenyon? :)

Galley Stove

I have found that the recreational vehicle stove/ovens work very well on boats. Check with them. Janet

Cook'n with gas.

One of the biggest improvements I made to my 33 was trashing the Kenyon stove and installing a Force 10 propane stove. As I tossed it into the dumpster I never considered any one would want a used Kenyon stove, it was the most useless piece of crap onboard my boat. Could be why your boat came without one. As a liveaboard a decent stove is important and I love the Force 10.
