Has anyone installed a tank under the V-berth? How, what model? The present 18 gallon tank just won't cut it on my inland lake boat. Isis practical to plumb to use two tanks?

Is your tank molded into the liner?

Jim: Is your tank molded into the liner under the v-berth? If it is like our H'31 ('85) I do not know why you could not fit another tank in under the present one and have a 'Y' valve to control the flow. You will also need a 'Y' for the pump out too and another vent. It may be worth checking out.

'Twould be a nightmare

It's one thing to have two water tanks in tandem...water is being drawn OUT of the tanks, so no chance of overflowing one if you forget to pay attention to the level. But two holding tanks in tandem is a disaster waiting to happen. Plus, it would double all the tank odor control and vent maintenance. The answer is either a larger tank or less flush water consumption, or both. If your head is aft, the v-berth would not be a good location...the hose from the head to the tank would be WAY too long. However, if your head is forward and there's room under the v-berth for a significantly larger tank than the one you have now, that's a good place for one. Check out the Ronco catalog (link below)...they have several bow-shaped tanks. Decreasing the volume of flush water per flush can dramatically increase the number of flushes any tank will hold...what toilet do you have?

My 83 Hunter 34 has a 25 gal holding tank.

If your only hold 18 gallons, perhaps it has an obstruction. ~ Happy sails to you ~ _/) ~

Doubtful....

Although, if the tank were neglected, 17 years of sludge accumulation COULD reduce the capacity by 7 gallons. However, I think it's more likely that neither your tank nor his was factory installed...'cuz prior to 1991, OEM holding tanks on all Hunters were aluminum...and except for those that haven't been used, very few of 'em have lasted anywhere near this long.

Head is a raritan PHII Manual, tank is not metal

my original holding tank is under the forward setee on starboard side. clearly apppears to be factory original on my 83 boat. I would like to have a larger tank under the v berth and before I tear up the v berth area, am hoping to find someone who has already installed one there on the Hunter 34.

Not all alum.

The tank on our 1985 Hunter 31 is NOT alum. It is a fiberglass tank that was molded into the liner under the vberth.

You should be able to reduce flush water by half

by flushing mostly in the "dry" mode...going to wet only with solids and to rinse the bowl and hose behind urine. At the end of each weekend, flush about a quart of water through to rinse out the system a bit more thoroughly. The number of flushes you tank will hold should increase by at least 50%. Except when you have guests aboard... You can teach your family to conserve flush water, but you're not gonna be able to re-train other boat owners to do it, and landlubber guests are risky enough without letting 'em flush without flush water.

Peggy, already did that

Have been exceptionally conservative.. my thought now is to add a y valve and a tank under the forward berth. Others have suggested picking up a few gallons by replacing current tank with larger capacity under my H34 setee... but I want more than 7-8 gallons more. I want a major holding tank addition. By the way, love the PHII. This is the second boat that I have had one on. so much easier to flush than a Jabsco.

Check the Ronco site and start measuring

available spaces looking for a place to put a 30 gallon tank. Don't even THINK of trying to link a second tank to your existing system. That will create at least 3x more problems than it will solve. I dunno how many people are typically aboard your boat, or how often between pumpouts you consider reasonable... but I only had an 18 gallon tank on my last two boats, and only had to pump out about once a month...another couple aboard for the weekend took a week off that.

If a Y valve is used between the two tanks and they are installed in close proximity, why would the problems be compounded? The logistics of monitoring them and pump out would however hardware failure and would be no worse than expected. Jim

Maintenance x 2

Two vents to keep open, two tanks to pump, rinse, and TRY to keep odor-free...and a y-valve that somebody meant to turn...thought somebody else turned...meant to close, forgot to close...resulting in a tank that everyone thought was empty--till the other one gets full too--invariably that'll only happen when guests are aboard. Trust me... 1 toilet x 2 tanks = problems x 2.
