We often have some pretty stiff winds here. 25-30 mph. We're fairly new to Catalina's and have great faith in our boat. A little worried about sailing when the wind is strong. Will she only heel so far and stop or is it possible to dump her all the way over? Any suggestions for keeping her upright in heavy winds? Reef the main or what? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Roger

Reef early & often

Sorta the Catalina owners motto! To answer your question: yes, you can dump a C22 since they're not very heavy especially compared to 30 knt winds. Hopefully some experienced C22 owners will be able to give you more specific advice but I would suggest being very aware of what kind of winds are forecast for when you go out, that way you can be prepared with proper sails, etc. If it starts picking up, reef your main early. This saves you from doing it when you're getting the crap beat out of you later! Besides, you'll have better speed if you keep the boat under control. If you still have too much sail up, reduce the size of your jib. If that's too much, take the jib down entirely. I'm assuming you only have one reef point in your main - if you have two, reef a second time - if not take it down completely & head for home! Although C22s aren't easy to knock down, it can happen and when it does it can be catastrophic. Usually folks go sailing with the hatchboards open so they can get below quickly. I would suggest replacing the hatchboards before going out. That way if you do, by some freak of nature, get knocked down, your boat won't fill with water and might prevent it sinking. Make sure the hatch is closed as well or the boards might just float away. Like I said, this isn't a common occurence but it can happen in heavy winds, so better to be prepared than not. Good luck! We experience some pretty heavy, gusting winds on Lake Champlain--especially when the cooler winds of autumn blow. In addition to reefing (I added a second course of reef points when I had a new sail made), I employ a small headsail (aka "handkerchief") that came off a 16 foot day sailer. This has a luff of about 10' and a foot of about 4. This, in combination with the reefed main, allows us to sail along comfortably in gusting winds and the choppy water produced by these on the lake. Best wishes.
