I've been digging around behind the electrical panels on my 9.2A, adding some items while trying to simplify the existing wiring. I assume that mine is typical, with two common busbars. The one on the left, behind the DC panel, is jam packed. The one on the right, behind the AC panel, has very little on it. Although it makes me a bit uneasy, I've been told that the two panels share these bars and that I can move items from one busbar to the other without consequence. Is that correct? I measured DC volts from a battery terminal to the two bars, and one measured something like 13.25 volts, while the under-utilized one was right around 14V. I had a solar panel charging. Seems odd, though, that they'd differ.

While hooking up the Blue Seas panel meter, I discovered that my bank 1 and 2 cables had at some point been reversed. I've been running the lights, etc., at night off the starting battery, and had been starting the engine with the deep cycle. That could explain a number of minor issues I'd had!

I also discovered that, while having a kidney stone might be a good reason to use some sick leave and putter around at the boat, working on electricals - particularly with a conductive fish tape - while heavily under the influence of Vicodin is not a safe thing to do. I suppose the odor of vaporized insulation will fade eventually.

Disconnect the power.....

...when working on electrical John or you might pass that kidney stone the hard way.....

as for the buss bars i dint remember how mine was wired as i gutted the system with the intentions of using new replacements...i put a 15 connection bar on the 12vdc side and and a double 10 screw on 120vac side ...they were both Blue sea products that can be covered up when done...i will try to get pics some time today and post it here .....

Many terminal strips (other than flat bars with screws on them) are simply connectors with separators built-in. In many cases, to save cost, they are not physically separated into AC and DC. As long as there aren't any connectors ("jumpers") between the AC and DC "landings", just be careful where you place the wires.

Draw a wiring diagram before you do anything. Look carefully to see where or if you have any jumpers. Once you do the diagram, it'll become much clearer to you as to what's there.

A picture might help.

Good luck.

Given my recent experiences, I like the idea of the covered busbars! I think I'll see if there's enough room to add another 12VDC bar and then spread the wealth over the two of them.

Got a lot of the wiring done today. Have the fridge on its own breaker now, the panel meter now tracks all three banks as well as the water tank, and I've got a shiny new Newmar (that's been forming the foundation of the parts pyramid for about three years) gently charging all banks. I'll eventually go back inside the panel and add some more features to the Blue Sea meter. I mainly want it to track DC current usage, particularly so I can see what kind of load I run at night with the lights and fridge on. Lights are now all LED, and the fridge, drawing 3AH, probably runs less than 20% of the time, so I'm hoping the hefty AGMs in bank three will handle it all nicely.

OK here ya go John... the pics of the electrical panel.... the first pic is of the 12 vdc buss bar...the second pic is of the 120vac buss bar.....the third pic is of the panel cabinet open...the fourth pic is of the cabinet closed....

Woody,

I am, as always, in awe of your work. I love the hinged access to the wiring behind the panel and may try to duplicate that.

Did I misread something of yours a few months back? Is your S2 in the water yet? I had thought you were some ways from that point, but then read something that gave me a different impression.

If you need a hand with the launch, let me know. I'd love to be there. We could drag Bob down from New England and make it a party. He could tell his wife it's the vacation she'd always dreamed of.
