I.m just getting ready to depart on my annual long cruise up to gorgeous British Columbia and in the past years I always had a web site where I could check fuel prices (diesel); however, I just checked and it's ... GONE! Does anybody know if there is any site out there with recent comparative prices for Puget Sound and British Columbia? (Interested in fuel retailer sites on salt water not lakes)

Too F-ing much everywhere

Whoops, sorry, John, we're back in touch. As you may remember, our family lives on VI, between Nanaimo and Victoria. I'd figure more, not less, that here (US), based on the usual exchange rates, liters and gallons, francs and Euros, quesidillas and gauchos. How much different can it be and how much motoring are you planning to do? We just returned from a California Delta cruise, and it was so hot and calm that we HAD to motor, six hours each day, to get home. Still 1/2 gph. Nice to know our boats can also be MBs too. Have a great trip. PS if there's one website for fuel prices there, is there one for HERE?

Hopefully Not Much Motoring

Don't really plan on doing much motoring but it's more a matter of principle - avoiding the really high-priced places. Several years ago I got fuel and the guys/gals on the fuel dock wore T-shirts that said they have the highest fuel prices anywhere! What was worse - they were right! This was either Friday Harbor or Anacortes, probably the former because Anacortes is connected by highway to Interstate 5. Destination is the Broughtons in BC and maybe northward of Port Hardey. http://www.orcasailing.com/broughton/index.html Been passed them numerous times but never really stopped and gunkholed 'em and it's about time. Plan to really take it easy this time and, for real, "go the way the wind blows". We'll see what happens. With any luck I'll burn more fuel with in diesel heater than in the engine. It's been miserably hot the past week or so but it's just cooled off a bit this evening so I have to go up the mast and reinstall the aneometer. Stu - Delta in July???? Ouch. How do you spell masochist? Hopefully there was some morning fog?

When you start thinking about how much

diesel fuel costs think about how much slop galley slaves eat and how much that costs. And all of the yelling and whip cracking and drum beating. Diesel fuel is cheap. ;-)

Drum Beaters? That's Good!

Nothing like a little subtle humour, eh Ross? Well, on this ship, unfortunately, it's more than likely me that's getting whipped! As for food, we like to find "interesting things" in the stores that you don't find in the states to add a little spice, if you will, to the meals. North of Campbell River, though, this can be hard to do. Can't wait to get underway!

Hot, what?

John There's that old song "But the Bronx is Beautiful, This Time of Year." Our trip was curtailed due to heat. We thought it was hot at 105, but 116 was recorded a few days after we "retired," and came back home (to mere 95s). Now it's time to start complaining about how cold (57 at 9 a.m. in the fog) it is here during the summer... Have a great and safe journey. PS can you get some of those T shirts and send me one?

Crabs and Diesel

Last week in Bedwell Harbour I caught 20 legal-sized crabs using two chicken breasts marinated in herbs. Had to throw 12 back to meet the possession limits. When you can have crab feasts over white wine every night who cares about the price of diesel. It was about $1.06 per liter at Van Isle.

Bon Voyage, John and Ingrid

Hope you guys have a great time. Strong recommendation for Kwatsi Bay in Tribune Channel. It's a beautiful place, and Max and Anka, the folks who run the rustic marina there, are lovely people. Have fun! Gary and Catherine S/V Wanderlust h37.5

price of fuel

Just filled up today in Vancouver...$1.07 a litre for Diesel. Seems to change every day though so take that into account. The higest prices that I've seen were in Bedwell Harbour a few years ago. Sidney's were about the best. RG. Pretender.

So THAT'S where that NOAA weather report came from

Yesterday (the 29th) we woke at 6am to catch the same tide. We had to get south to Friday Harbor to clear customs. (no more phone ins, damnit!) It was cold as hell in FH. Blowing like stink too. Weather radio said gales in the straights. We decided to sneak out the back way to Deception Pass. Cleared Lopez pass about 11:30 with the dogs drugged because of the gale. The AW was never over 8! I had to yield to a tug with a tow. He was headed south to the sound. (we hoped) I followed in his wake. The barge flattened the water. So much for Deception Pass. Our boat speed never was under 8 knots. We followed that tug all the way to Bainbridge Island. Arrived home sooner than if we would have used Cattle Pass! And that is even with the two hour diversion to Lopez Pass. I'd never heard of that current over there against Whidby Island. It was still daylight when we pulled into Brownsville. And that's while towing our 'heavy' dingy. We didn't take the engine or fuel off of it. And we never saw a wind wave. Glass water all the way. NOAA predicted a gale the whole time. Oh John, as you'll know by now, fuel is about $1.10 per litre up there. Have a great trip. I managed to get a sunburn. (don't ask where it's at) Hope to go back next week.
