Hi All. I need to re-pack the packing gland on my 1984 Newport 28, Universal 5411 diesel engine, 7/8 prop shaft diameter. Anyone know what size packing material to buy? Does 3/16" diameter sound about right? Thanks for any help!

Here is what I did.

I wondered the same thing prior to changing the packing on my own 7/8th shaft setup. I made a small little shim of wood 3/16ths by 3 inches or so long, and one that was 1/4". Then I unscrewed the packing gland apart, water leakage was very very litle. I was then able to easily pull out the old stuff and then I slid in the wooden 3/16ths shim first as I suspected that would be the right size and it was. It fit in there just right. Then with a renewed confidence I drove to the Ships Store and bought some GTF and have never seen a drip since.

Use a drill bit to check the size

Heard this question many times. To determine the correct size packing for your prop shaft stuffing box, back out the packing nut. Take your drill bit set. Select what you think is the correct size drill bit. Place it but first into the gland. The biggest bit that fits is the size packing that you need. Re-tighten the stuffing box. Go to the store and buy your stuffing with confidence that you have the right size. Steve Alchemist
