I'd like a depth sounder and am on a tight budget. I've noticed some fish finders are cheaper than depth sounders. Do they give you the bottom depth besides showing you the fish? Would a fish finder make a good substitute for a depth sounder? Thanks.

Absolutely

Yes they work very well .Most can be mounted inside the boat as long as there are no air bubbles when attached to the hull.

I have had an Apelco for about 7 years

it not only shows depth but also bottom contours. I depend on mine to show the slope of the bottom when I am approaching shallow water.

Happy with mine.

Couple of years ago we bought a Cuda 168 for about $89 at Wal-Mart and it works fine. I've seen it on sale for $67-$69 at various stores since Christmas. We epoxied the transducer to the inside hull under the port settee. Just needed to get it wet to make sure we got a reading. Mounted the monitor to a slim, thin board that we drop into the companionway slots when we go sailing. Mac

One thing to be aware of

before you mount the fish finder transducer inside the hull is that it won't work through a cored hull. Aside from that, a fish finder makes a lot of sense instead of a more "traditional" depth sounder. If I didn't already have a depth sounder in my boat, I would seriously consider a fish finder because of the increase in information that you can get from that type of an instrument (besides, fish finders are usually a lot less expensive than a depth sounder!). Super buy at Cabela's

Right now Cabela's has a special on a Bottom Line Tournament 1101 with temp for $39.99. Check out their website. Do a seach for 1101. Other dealers including Gander Mountian will match the price. Bass-Pro may also.

I've got a hawk-eye

I have a Hawkeye, which I paid around 50-60 bucks for from west marine. there is nothing fancy about it, it just gives you the depth in feet and tenths, but one thing is it has alarm settings for min. and max depths. I put it in a year ago, but the dispalay crapped out and was easily replaced (for no charge) The jury is out still this year hopefully it was just a bad display and the new one will be fine. The really big advantage is it did not require a hole under the water line, it is a through-hull transducer, very nice.
