Dreaming....

Geez Bob, now how am I going to make it through another week at work? Boy does that sound like a great invitation. If I didn't have a 10 month old at home I'd start making plans right now! Have fun! Trevor

Why do you need crew?

Unless they didn't know what they were doing (in that case, they should be looking for a captain), two+ men on a 40' Benny just doing Island hopping shouldn't need a crew, right?

get a life

What an asinine response to a kind invitation from one who may want to share a great experience with a couple other guys. Wish I could go - maybe I can. Franklin, get off your high horse. At any rate Bob, have agreat trip!! Scott

I might be interested

Bob, I might be interested in that trip. What's the point of busting your a**, working for yourself if you can't take a little extra trip off now & then? Of course the last time I took 2 weeks off in a row I had to do double time for a week before trying to get all the work lined up for my absence and double time for a week when I got back, trying to catch-up (if I'm not there, it doesn't get done). Nothing is free. Bob, I'll make note of your phone # and mull it over for a bit. Maybe I'll give you a call after the first of the year. Sounds like a great trip! Tom s/v Orion's Child

Kind invitation

Franklin, That's a rather rude response. I wish everyone on this planet has a heart as big as Bob's. There wouldn't be conflict or any need to make or find WMD. I invited people to cruise all the time not because I needed a crew. I did it just for social interaction. One time I even invited street kids (a.k.a. HOBO) for a great day sailing to help them find a meaning of life. I single-hand club racing around Lake Ontario on my 30 footer all the time. I wouldn't call myself a good sailor but I can hold my own. If Bob has the desire, capacity and plan to go the distance I am sure he can handle the boat. Any good skipper has to be able to handle the boat by themself if the crew become incapacitated. If I have the time I would certainly take Bob up for such a generous offer. My 2 cents..

Yes, it is a kind offer

I just don't see why somebody would risk ruining their vacation by bringing a total stranger onboard for weeks (not a couple of hours) when they weren't NEEDED. People ask for crew all the time because they are NEEDED and they accept the risks involved because of the payoff. I don't see any payoff here...just risk. That's why I asked. Maybe there is a payoff that I don't see. Does it sound like fun, yes. So much so that I was tempted to say put me down for a week, but then I got to thinking about how I don't know them and how I just did a boat delivery and after 9 days I begged the owner to go home and let me finish it alone. Then I got to thinking...they don't know me either and I can't see anything to gain because they don't need me as I can tell. Like they say, if it's too good to be true, it probably is. So Alex, I'm sorry you see my question as rude but I thought it was a perfectly honest and rightful question. Wait till you find yourself on a boat with people you can't stand but you can't get off the boat either, then you'll see my point.

It makes perfect sense

we used to do that in college for X-mas break. You'd furnish the wheels and got people to buy the gas, meals and do some of the driving. If you look at fixed trip expenses, that are not related to the number of passangers, like fuel, marina slip fees, cruising permits for each country, repairs, etc it becomes clear the intent. How are shared costs divided may hold the ultimate key but sounds like a good deal for both parties. If a person does not behave they just throw his a-- out in the next port o' call.

Benny

Depends...many people who crew expect to get paid for crewing, not share in the expenses.

Bob-contact OPO

Bob, you may want to contact Hank at Offshore Passage Opportunities. He puts captains with crews and crews with captains. He has been doing this for a living and his crew list contains experience crew. Members (like me) sign up and tell you if we have habits the you may want to avoid (such as smoking, luffing up too much (ha ha) etc.)

Crew for pleasure

First off, It sounds like a great invitation, especially for sailors that may not own a boat, or may want the experience of a long delivery before taking their own boat. Sharing expenses in this case would make economical sense, and one may find new life long friends with a common interest. I personally have made many passages and deliveries, with and without pay, as crew and as capain, several lasting weeks without a port of call. Frankly some of my best friendships were formed on the deliveries where everyone was more or less equal(although the ultimate resonsibility is on the owner/skipper) And to Franklin, we should all be glad you were so candid in your comments, because with that kind of attitude, you are certainly not shipmate material. You should perhaps always consider sailing alone!

Guys, Give a Bob a Break..

I think if this post didn't become such a competitive race on who can come up with the better response, he would give us more details on this trip. But who would want to try to explain anything if all they heard was...."What's his agenda, what's his agenda???" Bob, If you're the same guy Alexis wrote about(google), I may be interested in joining you guys for the trip. It sounds like a good time, and I'm into scuba too. Contact me via, ha.*****ya.***doin*****@*******gmail****.com <--just take out the asterisks and keep the dots. mahalo, -Sean

oops..the only negative was from Franklin

After I scrolled through a second time...I notice the only skeptic in the crowd was Franklin...my apologies to the others... -Sean

I agree with Franklin

but I don't like Blue Water sailing. Three or four days out and I want to come home! I think it is better to hire a crew to move a boat. I moved a boat up the east coast and it was heck. Storms every night, huge thunder heads, north easternly winds in your face. I said, "go inland", everyday. BUT, this trip sounds like fun!

sharing expense

If you're sharing the expense, you're not crew, you're an equal partner.

If your asking for crew

The owner should pick up 100% of the expense including food, fuel and air plane tickets.
