My 1968 Columbia 22' was sinking and we ended up giving it away. I need to take a class on refubishing, maintaining, repairing a new boat. I have not purchased it yet, but would like to keep the new one in top condition. I have been sailing for 40 years, but never had formal instruction. Any ideas?

There are a lot of schools out there that can teach you sailing but few that offer training on repairs. I suggest you find somebody in a do-it-yourself yard and offer to help them for free in exchange for an education on what it is they're doing. Most folks would welcome the help. BEWARE: Most do-it-yourselfers are relatively to completely incompetent when it comes to a complete overhaul/refit/refurbish but usually very good at regular maintenance with the occassional installation. Option Two: Get a job at a boat yard. Some of them will hire part-timers at a super reduced rate and spend a little time showing you the "ropes"

What a great idea! The new owner of my boat has it in a boat yard & it would probably be a good idea for me to find out how they repair everything from the depth meter to the electrical. Thanks for the response! Janice

Teachers travel the country teaching us PM and deeper maintenance. Check out their website for dates and places. An excellent school, I can attest. At least you'll be up on the engine.
