I own a 1992 Hunter 30, with a Yanmar 2GM20 inboard. The vessel is moored in Chicago, Ill. I am looking for recommendations/referrals for a reliable mechanic in the Chicago area. The task at hand is to replace the control cable that controls the engine's shifting device, using an owner supplied part. The cable runs from the pedestal, down to the engine compartment. I am not comfortable disasseblying the pedestal myself -- well, I am but I am not sure if I can put it back together! If you know of a reliable mechanic who can make a harbor call, or if you are such a mechanic yourself, please post a reply here. Or, even better, please send me a direct email to sail@irakliotis.com Fellow Chicago boaters: I am aware of Crowley's services (I am a satisfied customer). But Crowley's is rather busy this time of the year and their mechanics may not be available for harbor calls. Thanks much for your help. -leo

Leo, this is a no brainer, you can do it with...

minimal tools. If you have an Edson pedestal their web site has step-by-step instructions. Also, lots of advice on this forum. Terry

Terry, it's the routing too !!!

Terry, million thanks for the tip about the Edson's website. It does help. My other concern, hence the need for the mechanic, is how to route the darn cable. It goes through the aft storage compartment. And long are the days when I was slim enough to descent into that space. If I get there now, it will take a masting crane to get me out :) Any tips for this (other than a good diet)? -leo

Hi Leo, yes, tie the engine side of your old...

cable to the pedestal side of your new cable and pull the new through with the old. It should come through just fine with some finessing. At least that is what I would do. Terry
