Dear friends, Can anybody help me find a weather window? They tell me I can’t go sailing unless I have a weather window. I don’t want just any weather window, they tell me I need a good one that opens. I looked all through the West Marine catalog and can’t find any. Also can anybody give me some advice on how and where to install it? I need to know if it should go above or below the water line. Since your not supposed to go sailing until a good weather window opens, I need to know how that works under water? Do you use epoxy to install it or will silicone do since it keepws water out on regular windows? What about PL5200, won’t that make it stick open if I install it right? Then I could have good weather all of the time. I could really use some help with this. Do you think if I emailed Cruising World they would write an article on how to use and install one? You cannot test all the adult beverages at one time, nor is it good to mix a varity of margies, get your self a cup of good coffee and hold off on e-mailing Cruising World. r.w.landau Don't ever use silicone on your boat, and 5200 is only to hold the beer can in your hand in rough weather. good luck finding your weather window!

RW: You should NEVER use 5200 for attachment of beverages. Only use pitchtar (like the baseball players) or similar products. This gives you an EXCELLENT grip but also gives you the ability to rid yourself of one and pick up another.

Because lives are important, and the life you save may be your own, a good skipper would only use the best, such as a Coast Guard approved weather window; however, finding one is probably impossible. It might be required for safety but I've been sailing all these years without one. If you never went sailing until you had an approved one you'd probably never be able to go out. With regard to above or below the waterline, if a weather window was used below the waterline one should be able to avoid solar and wind damage but the trade off might be problems with sudden encounters with immoveable objects. Also, in all my years of boating I've never seen a weather window for use below the waterline but I have to admit I haven't looked for one either. I'd think a minimum requirement for a weather window would be one that is really water tight to keep the water out. After all, outside water souldn't be able to get inside the boat. If you happen to find a Coast Guard approved weather window get it and hang on to it and let us know where you got it!

Through careful observation I have noticed that the size of the window seems to vary according to the distance you intend to travel and the speed in which that can be achieved. The window size trends upward with distance increases and trends smaller with speed increases. Sailboats seem to require rather large windows. I have gotten by with very small windows when flying. I have had little success over the years in finding these windows in advance. When the departure date (or time) comes they are either there or not. If they are there it makes the journey much more comfortable and safe. If they are not there, you might want to consider another day for the adventure, unless you are comfortable traveling without windows. I have also noticed that even though I start a trip with the windows, sometimes they get lost on the way. Very elusive.

Wait, I know you would not hide a good bottle, it would be the first you shared with a guest. I would enjoy a short dish TV and a great sail. I was sailing along the Southern California coast last winter. Just to port my First Mate spyed the "weather window". For some reason we could not catch up to it, we were doing 5 knots. It was moving at 18 knots. It disappeared somewhere to the east in the black of night. I believe it is somewhere over the Sahara by now! If someone finds it let me know. I did have a tube of 5200 with me and could have easily glued it to something!

I’m glad you guys enjoyed that little flight of fantasy but I can’t take the credit for coming up with it all by myself. Dave of Sylvester and I were sitting around working hard at stretching and varnishing a few plain truths when he asked “ Where can I buy a weather window? Not just any weather window, I need a good one...” Thinks just started getting out of hand from there. E-Mailing is the best way of communication if we are going to be more specific, "_MCBUBBA720@AOL.COM_". When I drink,I dont use glasses,only the ones I wear to find a bottle,and no adhesive. We will only meet on the islands if you plan on going there. I dont know what you have gathered from my answering posts so I will give you a "shnapps"sist. I am a former marine from the korean war,DAV,but no medals for my effort.So that makes me going on 71 and a healthy one at that,to date. Live aboard a 450----1999 with a woman who went partners with me. She loves living on a boat and moving,I would say sailing but she dont like the boat when it is healed[thats a good one].DRINKING---I became dependant to booze awhile back, and the VA helped me out,20yrs ago. BUT--I have broken my vows about 15 times and last about a week,and I tell you baby I feel one comming on,so I got to get located. I do give away my keys for the duration and am a puppy. Oh I live in N.Y. One question, I had A buddy in korea named Cpl Jack Witherspoon,I doubt you know him but you never can tell,of course he was from Pittsburg. Tom Mcnamara P.S. What are we talking about when we say weather window. To me it is when it is a good time to fire up a rocket but it seems like you guys are talking about a window or port below the water line.Hell I dont think the water in N.Y. is worth looking at[rubber eals,boomies and dead rats]not to mention what the insurance co would say if you sunk. Please advise,we could have a cup of coffee??????????????????.
