Need batteries for emergency beacon.

I have these emergency beacons, the small ones that attach to your PFD. They are an older design that require two AA batteries where the entire case is the negative. Even have a label reminding you to scrape off the cover so that it will ground properly. But I cannot find those batteries. Somehow the current AA batteries isolate the body from the negative.

The batteries go postive end first to a contact on the bottom. About one-half inch from the bottom is a contact that rides against the side of the battery for the negative. If I could solder a wire there I could run it to the top and contact the battery negative end. But there is no way to get in there. There is only the hole the size of a AA.

I am not familiar with that model. Mine has a metal strip that goes down the side and makes the turn at the neg end of the battery in order to contact the end. The other end goes to the bulb socket.

Might be time to upgrade.

Ed, try to contact www.batteriesplus.com I've had success with them in the past while looking for some obscure batteries for electronics, MOB strobe lights and rechargeable batteries for marine flood lights.

I have NIMH rechargeable AA batteries that have the entire case connected to the negative, but, they only give 1.2 volts and have a relatively high self discharge rate.

There are literally 'hundreds' of AA 'battery packs' or AA battery 'magazines' available on the net - for toys, for cameras, for electronic gizmos, etc. etc. etc.

Do websearch for: "Battery pack + AA" and sort through all the offerings until you find the one that matches the one you have.

These are not "packs" Rich. There are two caps about one inch apart with the bulb in between. These plastic caps have rubber seals but not contacts. All the contacts are on the bottom near the switch. It calls for an Alkaline AA. I do have some rechargeables someplace that I should check. And I will contact BatteriesPlus. Tim has the right idea about "upgrading". Just hate throwing things away. Next it'll be me in the dumpster.

Some batteries have a plastic heat shrink wrap on them especially the rechargable. If you are careful you might peal it off with a razor blade to reveal the negitive outside. I found negitive by accident. Don't do it on a paper wrapped one though.
