Having second thoughts about mounting my new electrical panel forward of the shunt(pictured). I was working in that starboard locker on Monday and realized how hard it is going to be installing all that wire up there. So I am thinking about mounting the panel crosswises, between the engine bulkhead and the icebox. I would glass 1x2 onto the icebox and screw a like 1x2 just forward of the shunt.

So if one of you lucky owners whose boat is close by could measure that I would be grateful. I could almost calculate from the picture. But I can't remember if that battery is against the icebox or under it. I just need a rough estimate to see if my combiner, relay, and bus will fit.

Kills me to throw this much wire away. Two pieces are 14 footers. And the switch has a crack, might be time for a new one. You can see why I am concerned about getting three 1/0 cables onto that switch. It sits in a hole only 3 and 7/8". Maybe a new one would be bigger.

Ed. I am working on my steering system tonight until late. Taking out a 2x4 and broken blocks that supose stop the rudder from rotating too far.

Tell me again what space you need measured so I can understand better what you need.

Hi guys. Knew it wasn't clear when I wrote it. It is the space between the side of the icebox over to the engine bulkhead. It might not be square. Is the side of the icebox toward the engine vertical? Picture a board at a right angle to the shunt going over to the icebox. Make any sense?

I have the angle iron in the garage to fix the rudder stop problem. Been there six years. Picture is how it should look some day. Is that what you are doing?

Measurements

The distance between the engine wall and the ice box is 8.5 at the top and 9" at the bottom since the icebox tapers slightly. See if my picture shows the area we are speaking of.
There is a larger area just below that. Its 16 wide by 16 high. That's were my batteries were located when I got the boat.
I dont know how you will get there. Last time I crawled in the locker, I was there too long and I could not get out on my own. I had my cell phone and called my son that was still working at the store and he came up to give me a hand since I could no longuer feel my legs. Needless to say, the story has grown legs (so to speak) and is now a family joke repeated at gatherings.

The repair to the rudder is what you have in your picture except I purchased aluminum angle to avoid the rust that will follow.

Thanks Jose, exactly what I needed. Narrower than I was guessing. Probably because the batteries down there actually do go back under the ice box. My other thought was to mount my panel on the removable access panel, the one aft of my shunt. You can see the latch in your picture. In my picture it was already removed. When I sit in that locker I put my legs through that opening and over the prop shaft.

Aluminum for that shelf support/wheel stop is a good idea. Maybe I can recycle the iron.

Glad Jose got your measurement for you. At my size, I just barely fit thru the seat hatch into that locker, usually send mary into there.

Thanks for making the offer Bill. I don't think Jose had to get into the locker for that measurement. Probably just got his knees dirty from hanging over the lip.

This plan is not working out. There just is not a good place where the bus bar, fuse, and combiner will be easily accessible. If I move the stuff aft and onto that door I'll have to add length to all the 1/0 wire. I am already up to 50' x $5.24 ! :(

I didn't do it, but my splitter is on the bulkhead in the cockpit locker over the ref. One switch on the bulkhead in the galley Negative shunt and Positive bus bar in engine room on Q'berth side

Sure wish I could buy good tinned 1/0 wire here for $5.24. Next time I need some it might be worth a drive to Ohio to get some through you, Ed, and spend some time talking about our boats.

Ed,
Could you mount your combiner, buss bar, etc on the the aft side of the bulkhead above the ice box? I have quite a bit of electrical gear there (battery switch, windlass breaker, DC panel main fuse, battery charger controls as well as a 120VAC receptacle) all protected by a plexiglass sheild. The cable run would probably be no different than what you are contemplating, its a bit more accessible and more protected IMO.

That space has my Link 2000 and a circuit breaker for the fridge I am afraid. And my refer goes right against the bulkhead. Along with the battery switch of course. I'll take my little panel up there and see where it fits. Maybe across from the shunt on the side of the icebox.
