As a result of reading one of the threads, I was checking out this site recommended by a poster. www.marinesurvey.com/yacht/sinking.htm#Reverse Now this may be a dumb question but in the section on bilge pumps, the writer mentioned a "riser loop" on the discharge hose. Can someone explain how this is correctly done? I'm about to install a new bilge pump w/float switch. The previous owner just had a manual and apparently discharged over the side with the attached hose. Any help would be appreciated. Regards, Lysle

What I "think" they are talking about....

is the thru hull fitting (usually nylon) has a 90 degree fitting on it that point up. You then fit your discharge hose on this fitting and secure the hose to itself (with a wire tie or such) or to a bulk head with a nylon strap. It essentially prevents water from just flowing down the hose and into the bilge. We also have the same arrangement on our fuel hose vent.

It's just an arch in the bilge pump discharge hose

that's well above the water line. Of course, so should the bilge pump thru-hull be.
