Hunter 25 Mattapoisett
Hello,

I am a new Hunter owner, well new to me that is, she is a 78 Hunter 25. I don't have a manual for the H25, I emailed Hunter to see if they had one on file. All I have found is a three page basic schematic. I am going to have to re-wire the boat. I have read many threads and have decided to go LED for the three cabin lights and my Nav's. As I see it, I have three cabin lights, a Mast three-way and Port and Starboard Nav's. I am going to get a VHF radio and a Marine Stereo with two speakers.

All I will be running this off of is a 12V battery. I will use the Lights infrequently and I will be looking into a Solar charger for the battery..

Am I off my rocker, or does this seam feasible? I sail on a few boats now primarily a Soling with no power for the last ten eyars, so this is a new venture for me. All my friends with Cruisers have engines that can help them charge the battery.. I was hoping someone out there would be in my same situation.

Thank You!!

Clark

Feasible - absolutely. Easy - some yes, some no.

IMO, replacing end devices - fixtures or bulbs, etc. is no big deal. If you have to rewire, that will be your biggest challenge. I'd suggest getting a book like Don Casey's on boat electrics & wiring and start there.

Rewiring the H25.

It is likely that you will not find much additional in the way of wiring diagrams. The PDF for the H25 under "Boat Info" might be as good as it gets. Not much to it so long as you use the proper gauge wiring and keep it tied neatly tied out of harms way. You might step up to #10 from the normal #12. I assume there is no 110 AC to deal with. How far away from home you plan to sail might dictate a second battery.

Do you have a working switch panel(with breakers) and an operable battery switch? Is the battery properly wired through the battery switch to the panel? Those are the first steps. The overhead cabin light wiring is inside the headliner so not much you need to do if the lights work. What about the bilge pump? It should be wired directly to the battery, usually by attaching it to the hot lead on the red battery switch.

Hardest part is probably the wiring to the mast step and then the wiring actually in the mast. Does that all need replaced or added?

You mention solar for charging. What other sources do you have? You should have at least one of those cheap trickle chargers for those times when you can plug in the boat. Does your outboard have an alternator? Solar alone might not be enough.

Thank you both!

I will have to check into weather or not the Outboard has an Alternator, I will have to do a little more research and I have heard back from Hunter and they gave me a number to call to get a manual.. I need a crash course in Wiring and I will be doing my reading ASAP.. Thanks for getting back to me.

All the best,
Dan
