We’re heading to New Zealand’s South Island this August for a 14-day trip, based near Te Anau, with a 5 day self-guided sailing trip around Milford Sound on our chartered sailboat (Bénéteau First 36). Coverage is spotty on the water, but we need reliable data on land. So I’m looking at TooSIM for New Zealand. Seems good, but not 100% sure yet.
Family of four: me, my husband, teens (14 and 16). Planning the trip on August 5-19, so a 15 day window. Probably 5-10 GB each. iPhone 14 Pro, Samsung S23, iPhone 12, Pixel 7, so 4 eSIMs needed. We arrive late at Queenstown.
Can I install the eSIM profile before leaving home and have it auto activate on the NZ network? That would be convenient. TooSIM uses Vodafone NZ, good in towns but maybe weaker in the fjords. Can we manually switch to Spark if needed?
I compared TooSIM with Nomad. For 10 GB / 30 days, TooSIM is $17.99, Nomad is $35. For four devices, we save $68 total with TooSIM, that’s a big difference. Plus TooSIM often has promo codes as I see and has good human support. I’m leaning that way, but need to know coverage around Te Anau and Milford, especially for weather updates and tides before we set out each morning.
Also, we’ll be 5 days with no signal while out on the water. Does the plan pause or keep counting? The 30 day validity gives a buffer, so that’s fine. We’ll use Google Maps offline for hikes and drives, and Navionics for navigation on the boat. Anyone used TooSIM for data there?
