need advice to choose adequate solar panel

I would like to keep my 12 volt batterie charged without the use of an electric charger

I am thinking of a 20 watts solar panel , is that O K for my daily use?
I only use the G P S garmin 126 ,15 hours per week, and very rarely the cabin light and running lights ( may be 2 or 3 times in a season )

GPS is 2 watts ???

I would think that is enough. Does the panel have a built-in charge controller? What kind of battery?

yes , and the battey is a deep cycle optima yellow , and I think this might be its last season, I had it for 4 seasons ....

what if I decide to add depth finder sonar later on..or bilge pump.....???

That should still be fine. Be sure to use a charge controller though!

My Optimas are going on 6 years and still check out fine. (Blue Tops - just different posts) Of course it also depends on how they were maintained.

I've been using a 20w panel through a charge controller for several years now to keep my 2 group 27 deep cycles always charged up when I am not at the boat. Works splendidly. I've yet to ever use my AC charger. Agree with with Mike ... use a charge controller. One thought is why not go to a 30w or 40w panel? Price over the last severa years have dropped remarkably. Also the length x width dimensions aren't radically different.

by charge controller you mean that it will stop automatically when full charged ...

The size of the 30 and 40 watts seems too much for my mc gregor 22 ,

I will have to shop , thanks for advise ,
NB I am looking forward for a 30 feet in one or two years , and might want to keep solar panel ,

I've got a 15 watt on my C22 and voltage never drops below 12 volts when running a radio and interior fan.. 20 watts should be more than enough.

Alfred: Re your 20w preference -- recognize your boat is only 22'. But in case you haven't yet focused on the dimension vs watt relationship of solar panels, a quick check on eBay "buy-it-now" results for mono-crystalline panels (the most efficient type) resulted:

20w = 16.6" x 16.6"
30w = 17.5" x 21.4"
40w = 21.5" x 22.5"

All are quite small in size. Up to you to determine the pro/cons of the extra 3 - 6 inches vs. more watts. On eBay, the price increase increments as the watt rating increases is modest, not even close to double.

I have only a 20w panel because three years ago, the price of one was 2.5x's more than it is now. (I paid $140 for it). And a 40w back them was almost twice the price. Difference now is that cost of the solar wafers have plummeted, but the cost panel fabrication probably hasn't changed.

One quantitative approach to this is as follows.


1. Determine the load. Write down what things you want to use, when you use them, and for how long each time, over the weekend;
2. find the current that these things draw in use;
3. you can now calculate the aggregate load for the weekend (in Ah);
4. size the battery so that, assuming no solar contribution, you can make it through the weekend without discharging the battery more than 50% of its capacity;
5. determine the peak current at any particular time (from above); if it's less than the 20 hour discharge rate for the battery, don't worry about it; if it's more, see note 1;
6. size the solar panel so that in average summer weather it will fully charge the battery before next weekend; assume a charging efficiency of 91% - you need to put back 110% of what you take out;
7. to be very conservative - size the panel so that the battery is charged up in two or three days, so it can spend more time fully charged.

Note 1: for discharge rates higher than the 20 hour rating, you will get less energy out of the battery. This is called the Peukert effect. If you end up with this issue, you can de-rate the battery capacity for your calculations using Peukert's law (see wikipedia), and if necessary, arrive at the needed battery size by iterative calculations.

This algorithm makes a bunch of assumptions, and is simplified to err on the conservative side.

As for charge controllers, some are quite a bit more sophisticated than simply shutting off when the battery is full. I just bought a Morningstar Sunsaver - SS-10-12V. I found it online for $42. It not only does three-stage charging, but it performs an equalization charge every 28 days. It is selectable for wet or AGM cells. You can spend a lot less, too. A controller is definitely a requirement!

Note that you can make the battery bigger, that won't hurt anything, it just makes it heavier and more expensive, and it will probably last longer.
