Need Advice On Purcahsing a O'Day 23

Well I just found a 1983 O'Day 25 that's located about 75 miles north of where I live. I haven't seen the boat up close yet but the current owner has the title for the boat and motor and has owned it since 1998.All I know about it now is it has a new bimini and a 150 roller furler. Unfortunately he doesn't have a trailer. Asking price is $5,500.00.At least I'm starting out at only $100.00 more than I agreed to on the the O'Day 23 and I'm a year newer and 2 feet longer.Anybody got any input on whether this price is reasonable and general comments about the way the boat handles or anything to look out for other than leaking chain plates, etc...? It appears to be a 23' stretched to a 25'Thanks for your support!Gary

I don't have much input on the 25' other than it's the boat that steered me towards O'days in the beginning. A buddy of mine purchased a new 76'some 30 yrs. ago and I was able to spend some time sailing on it. It is pretty much the big brother to the 23'. Same issues pertain to it as the 23'. It does feel roomier down below and I believe it weighs in about 2000 lb. heavier. I had the chance to visit with a dock mate a few weeks ago on his 86' C27 and I have to say that the standing headroom the addtional 2' gets you is pretty nice. The 25 Oday comes close but if I recall I think you still have to stoop a little when down below. I believe the 25 also has a quarter berth that extends into one side of the cockpit as an extra berth or storage. Wish the 23' had it as it would make my V berth useable. I store a few items and the sails up there. If it looks like a good deal check around his marina or yours for someone that has a trailer for a 25'. Maybe work a deal to use it for the move. I don't recall the buddies boat being as tender in 15-20 knot winds. The extra weight should help somewhat in that case. Keep us apprised. Steve

I just spoke to the owner. He said there is a small leak in the chain plates but otherwise the boat is in good condition. He said the deck is solid.If I get off work early enough tomorrow I'm going to drive up and take a look at it. It's got a 9.9 electric start Johnson, a weather station, 150 roller furler, depth gauge, a cover that covers the top of the cabin, a brand new bimini top that's never been used, and it's the fin keel model. Does not have the stub keel with centerboard.He said it probably needs a bottom job. He put a West Systems barrier coat on it the last time it was out.He bought the boat from the original owner in 1998. It was on a trailer at the time he bought it but the owner kept the trailer. The original owner then turned around a few months later and sold the trailer to another sailor down the dock. My guy says the guy that owns the trailer has let him use it a couple of times to pull the boat and do a bottom job and thinks there's a chance I might be able to buy the trailer. If nothing else, he feels pretty sure the guy would let me use the trailer to move the boat to the Texas Hill Country.Gary

Anyone have a feel for what a 1983 O'Day 25 should sell for? The person I'm talking to is asking $5,500.00. under this sites classifieds. O'day Blue Book. There are 145 listings dating back to 2000. There is also BUC, which if I recall, involves buying the latest book to determine boat values. Check a good local library, they might have a copy. There are a couple other sites that can provide a value based on what it sold for. I think the sailing Texas site will show a sell price if you use the photo gallery's index. NADA can give you a value on a boat even if it is no longer in production.Hope this helps.
