I picked up a. couple of windlasses and would like to paint them,. The case and warping drum are made of aluminum, The warping drum is pretty oxidized on one of them, I can polish that off but what do I use to paint it? I will consider anodizing if not too expensive. Powder coating is another option but may be too slippery. I don't feel like disassembling the case so I would just like to pain it.
Has anyone reconditioned theirs, and how did it hold up?

bead blast the white housing and and paint it with rustoleum epoxy appliance paint as for the capstan just clean and polish it or piggy back a load with some one at the anodizing shop most shops charge a minimum and some don't have a lot to make that minimum ...the gypsy looks like it is bronze if so just bead blast it.....if that is the kind i think it is check the break plates on the gypsy they may be worn out ...you can get the replacements plates at morie (spelling) pro

Thanks for the suggestions the Rustoleum Appliance paint should do it. I'll stop by a plating shop on the way home and get a price on anodizing.
I checked it and they both have a what looks like a phenolic cone for a brake/clutch and both seem to be ok. They lock up pretty tight without much effort. The other is a Hyspeed Lawrence and the brake was frozen but I was able to remove the clutch nut with some WD40 and a lot of leverage. It spins like new now.
