Hello good people, I'm restoring a Catalina 22 that will be on a trailer when not in used. I will be sailing mostly in fresh water lakes. My question is, what would be the best bottom paint to buy. I've gone to Jamestown dist. and another local pro in California and got 2 different answers. One said top side paint and the other said gel coat. Any help would be welcomed. Thanks

You mentioned the trailer so... are you asking about bottom paint or something else.

If you keep her on a trailer, you don't need anti-fouling bottom paint.

I have had very good results with oil based Rustoleum enamel. The best part about Rustoleum is that you can get an exact color match many years later so... touch ups are easy. The oil based is very amenable to the roll and tip meathod and self levels very well. Most of the work is in preparing the surface so spend your time and energy getting the surface ready and the paint job will be easy and come out nice.

Here are a few boats I've painted with rustoleum..

If you are dry sailing off a trailer or a hydro hoist you don't need bottom paint. Just rinse it down when you pull out.

Some may say no, but this is VanSickle tractor paint from orscheln farm and home. Applied with a foam roller and tipped with a dry foam roller.

Cheap boat, cheap paint.

Thanks RGRANGER, Yea I am looking for bottom paint. Thanks for the info. All the best
Generally when sailors are talking about "bottom paint" they are referring to antifouling bottom paint which a trailer sailor does not need unless it is left in the water for long periods of time, i.e., weeks or months.

If the boat is going to live on the trailer, then a good quality enamel will do. Do not make the mistake some have made and use house paint. It won't work.

Ditto on no need for bottom paint if you're a trailer sailor.

What's on there now?
