Need Advice On Installing A New Halyard

I need to replace the halyards on my H34 and need advice. 1) What type of line should I be looking for? Type, size, legnth? I need both a main and jib halyard. 2) I'm told to use the old halyard to pull the new one through. I will remove the shackle first. On my current halyards the shackle end is thicker than the rest of its' length due to the loop that's formed in that area. Will I have a hard time pulling the old and the new through the sheeves at either end of the mast due to the thick ends? 3) How should I attach the new halyard to the old to pull it through? Thanks for any help. Joe Mullee

Use a messenger line.

Purchase a hundred feet of small but strong line at Lowes or Home Depot. Fasten that to the bitter end of your current halyard. I use my sail sewing kit and tape. Steve D. likes the paperclip and tape for making the connection. Pull the halyard out and now only the messenger line is in the mast. Attach the new halyard in the same way to the messenger line and pull it back the other way. This saves your current halyard, keep it for a spare. Work carefully and slowly so that you do not jam the halyard or messenger line and separate them. As for length you can measure the one you just pulled out. Basically the height of the mast times two plus distance to the winch if led back. A common length for large boat prespliced halyards is 115 feet. That is what I buy.

h34 Halyards

I put four new ones on my boat and two were 1/2", two were 7/16", all were 115' long. Unless you need to save the old ones it would be easier to cut the loop off (and avoid using a chase line). I always sew the ends together with sail thread and cover with tape. Pull gently and watch for snags or tangles.

Another way

Don't yell at me, but this works. Your new halyard will probably be pre-spliced. So, cut the splice off of the old halyard end. Then hold the new halyard next to it. (the end without the splice) Apply a flame so as to melt both ends at the same time. When hot, quickly rotate the ends and butt them together until they cool and set. Test your joint by pulling. (one side in each hand) If it comes apart you probably need more heat. (or less muscle) Now all you have to do, on a H34 is go to the cockpit and pull. You will soon have the new tail in your hands. Cut the joint and melt. Job done.

Fred Ficcara, What Size, Type, Length?

Fred, I have a 1983 H34. I want to replace both halyards. Can you give me advice? Thanks. Joe Mullee

I also have a 1983 34

I replaced both halyards last year. The Main is 7/16" and about 120' long. The jib halyard is 1/2" and you can put two 40' lengths, or one 80' looped in the middle. ~ Happy sails to you ~ _/) ~

Re: New Halyards

The idea of replacing old halyards with new is really very easy. 1) Decide on the size you need. This is based on the strength and stretch of the line. A 3/8" spectra halyard is far stronger and streches less than a 1/2" dacron double braid. It also has less turnig friction so the sails are easier to hoist. 2) Install a long eye splice in one end and stitch the eye to the end of the old halyard. Pull the shackle end of the old halyard through until the new eye splice. Seperate the 2 halyards and cut the shackle off the old halyard and install it on the new long eye splice. Done. PS, Spectra halyards will outlast dacron double braid by at least 2:1

Replaced mine last year

Your love the difference it will make..You will be able to pull the sail up all the way with ease without the winch until the last foot or so...I had Wayfairer marina in Camden Maine replace mine last year after I lost mine so I don't have the size or length sorry.

Joe, I just posted the lengths I bought, last week

I'll look again. Hold on. Here ya go, hope you don't mind the chatter; :) (My main halyard is a little longer than needed so as to reach my hydraulic winch) Good morning Fred, Rain in the North West coast today ? No problem for the extra length of the boom vang. We have sent a paypal invoice for the amount of $507.24 USD to cover the lines and shipping. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Pleasure doing business with you. It is easy when you come prepared with sizes and lengths !!
