I just boat an O'Day 25 (1977, centerboard) with an Evinrude 6.5 hp outboard. Assuming it works, what kind of boat speed can I expect? I am making a 60 mile delivery in Long Island Sound in a couple of weeks and I am trying to plan the trip. Will it get me to hull speed? Thanks

Hi Chris, Would plan 2 days with 30 miles each day. Took a 25 Cape Dory with 7.5 HP 55 miles in one day -with depart at 0400 and arrived 1700. Original plan was 2 days but got cut short one day due to rigging problems. Contitions were light to no air - flat seas. 6.5 HP should make 5+ in fair conditions and about headway with wind 20kts and seas on the nose. When cruising I fire up the engine when hull speed drops below 4 kts since a typical day would like to cover 25 miles. Same is true for overnight but distance = 100 miles. If the boat is new to you - not a bad idea to get underway around 0800 and make to port by 1400. Good Luck, Bob

Chris, One major question: Is this your first boat trip in this weather in the area you are planning to travel? If you are not sure of the motor, plan to sail part of the trip. The 6.5 at max power may give you just below hull speed, (that is a long time to keep a motor at full revs)5 to 6 knots or 6 to 7 mph. This does not take into account tides nor wind nor sea conditions. Bob is right. Leave early weather permiting and make sure that you have stops available along the way should you need them. If you are not sure of the motor, be prepared to sail if the power is down. Answer to your question: It might make hull speed but I would figure 25% less for your trip. At hull speed that is 10 hours in the best conditions. Figure two days and if you make it in one, you lose one day of being on the boat. Plan to enjoy your trip. I am sure weather is still pretty cold up there. Make sure you have a way to get warm. Let someone know your plan and keep intouch with that person. When it is cold, time is of the essence. Thanks for the responses. My crew and I have many years experience in these waters and we hope to make it most of the way by sail. There are ports with great marinas about every 5-10 miles so its a safe body of water. I apreciate your advice.

Where is your starting point and where are you ending?? that is important. If you are headed from Western LI Sound east then it is less of a problem, but if you are either coming from the Hudson or points west of LIS then you need to take into consideration hudson river tides, NY Harbour, east river/hells gate tides, etc.) I'm making a similar trip on my new Oday 28 at the end of the month of April but I'm going from City Island up the Hudson Best of luck
