I need a new outboard - I am a new owner of a '78 O'Day 25 - I am considering a Nissan 9.8 - 4 stroke - seems to be in the right weight and power range - I currently have a '78 Johnson 9.9 2 cycle - that has yet to turn over - My question - should I get the long shaft - 20" or the extra long shaft 25" Thanks for your input!

if money were no object, get the longer shaft. If you're not going to see to much in the way of swell or waves the regular long shaft should work, but always better safe than sorry

Extral long shaft
The extra long shaft will make a big difference. Definitely worth it. I have a long shaft model on my 23, and it is just long enough. Any real swell will cause the prop to cavitate. If my outboard had been offered with a 25" option, I would have bought it in a heartbeat. btw, before you buy a four stroke, make sure the bracket on the transom is specifically rated to accomodate one. Its not just the extra weight of a four stroke that is at issue; four stroke engines generate more torque than two stroke engines. If the mounting bracket is not designed to handle the increased force, it could fail. Not good. If the mounting bracket on your 1978 Oday is original, it definitely cannot handle a four stroke (they didn't make them back then). You can get a direct replacement mounting bracket (no need to drill new holes in the mounting block or transom) from Rudy at D&R Marine. His website is in the links section of this site.
