Hi-Anyone out there have experience sailing the wing keel 22'?I'm looking at a 1988 model.I'm especially interested in ease of raising the mast (how many people do I need to sail this boat!!), performance/problems w/ this boat and ease of getting the boat off and on the trailer. Thanks for your help. Mike

Mast Raising

I have an '87 C-22 with swing keel and I believe they are the same except for the keel configuration. I have a "Mast Up" and attach the forestay to my boat trailer winch so two people can easily raise the mast (I just did it again Thursday). Sailing the C-22 alone is very doable, depending on your ability. I do it solo mostly when the conditions are favorable and it is a very enjoyable experience. It also helped me to sail better when with other people because I don't need to rely on them to help. It makes them more comfortable and me happier. If the price is right and the boat is in good condition buy it!

wing keel,single-handed

I have "89 cat 22 wing keel" buy the "down-haul" kit from catalina direct & I would suggest getting their manuel book & also joing the catalina 22 assoc. I'm not big on clubs but each of these come with different manuels. The assoc sends out a maunel with all sorts of stuff like "sailing single handed" which gave me lots of confidence at first. With the "down-haul" I don't have to get on the "top-deck" lower the genoa. You will also find several guides on raising the mast single-handed. The wing keel is great for getting close to shore. Really close. Good luck!

C22 Wing Keel

We bought a 1989 C22 wing keel a few months ago and it was the best decision we've made in awhile. We were able to raise the mast useing just the two of us and a long lengh of rope. My wife hauled on the line which was attached to the forstay while I did the raising on the boat itself. After it was at about 30 degrees, the mast became very easy to hoist as my wife had the mechanical advantage by then. The trailer we use has an extension tongue and without that, we would have to use a sling lift. Better to just launch her and then keep her in a slip if you can. Hauling out annually for maint., paint, etc.. Watch your water depth with that wing though. We have run aground twice and while it was a confidence builder in our opinion of the hull, it was also very embarrassing. We now use a depth sounder and try to keep out of the bay at low tide. Tampabay is notorious for being shallow with large expanses of flats. Anyway, you are making a great choice and will enjoy her for many years. Best of luck! David Sprague Skipper of: s/v Oh Yeah

wing keel 22

I bought an 89 wing keel Catalina Capri 22 and was able to launch it on a ramp where I had trouble with a swing keel Venture 17. The longer trailer (Trailmaster) enabled the boat to float off easily. Mast raising with furler require two people. Singlehands easily.
