I haven't sailed in 20 years and I am looking at a 1981 Catalina 25' Any advice? Things to look for? Questions to ask? Special concerns? Thanks.

It's a Great Boat!

I had a '79 for a year on the Potomac in Virginia. Great boat for river sailing. If it has the retractable keel be sure to check the pivot point, cable and winch for wear. Not a bad repair if needed. Good luck! Mike Turner S/Y Amity (C30)

Go for it!!

We have a 1982 and love it! We had a few rain leaks, and some blisters, but nothing terrible. You can't expect a perfect older boat!

I was in the same situation 3 yrs ago... Purchased a '79 25' Cat, fixed keel, that I keep on Lake Michigan. It's been a solid boat for the last three years. Did have to replace the main sail shim (1st year), I would drop the mast and inspect (lesson learned the hard way) as mine broke leaving the main sail up (doooh!). Not fun for an unexp sailor. I still have the OEM Chrysler outboard 9.9 horse, runs like a champ but required a rebuild of the linkage. I also have a little delamination on the sliding hatch and it looks like the port side cockpit seat could use some reinforcing as well as the port side cockpit cleat. All in all, an excellent experience. Hermes is quick (although I'm not a racer..), responds well, and is very forgiving. Have fun! Kevin
