My wife and I are considering a charter ownership - somewhere in a tropical location. I spend about 1/3 of my time writing -and it doesn't really matter where I am. My wife and I also attend a lot of conventions across the country. Ideally - we would like to have our boat in the Caribbean or Mexico – not to far from an airport. My dream has always been to be a commuter cruiser – and to spend 1/3 of my time in a tropical location and do my writing on my boat. Our time is flexible – and we can use the boat off season for at least the traditionally required 5 years. My hope after that is to spend 1/3 of my time on the boat in 5 years. We would like a 38 – mid 40 foot sailboat –something easily handled by the two of us. Our current boat was out of a cruising fleet and the boat was in better than new shape – but it is my understanding that some charter groups really beat the boats up. Any suggestions of locations or charter groups would be appreciated. We would be ready to purchase within two years if all goes well.

Charter Ownership

4 months per year aboard doesn't leave much time for the charter company. I think it will be too expensive to keep in such an arrangement.

I should have been clearer

Thanks for the resonse - actually at this point we would be lucky to use the boat 2-3 weeks. I 5 years it would be 1/3 of the year. SWD

Practical Sailor

There is an article in one of the 2002 issues of Practical Sailor on the subject of charter ownership with a lot of good guidance. You can check their archives and buy a reprint.

Bad Idea unless .............

your time is during hurricane season. Then any charter will gladly take your money wear out your dream boat in 2-3 years
