Does anyone know an affordable source of teak for making parts for the boat? West Marine has what I need, but good heavens, just for the little shelf I want to make it's more the $50 of wood.

Try ebay.

I bought three boards of teak from various sellers for about half the price a specialty lumber supplier wanted, and only about 35% of the West Marine price. I'm slowly replacing some trim with these boards, and will likely have enough left over to make a wide shelf over the sink area. ~ Happy sails to you ~ _/) ~

Look in Yellow Pages

in the Seatac directory under "Hardwoods". If you cannot source it locally, and since SeaTac is a large boating area it should be available locally, it is very expensive to have teak shipped.

Noah's Wood has it.

Try Edensaw in Pt. Townsend...

They're a good source for all kinds of boat building wood. I'm not sure you can do much better than $50 though, but you might get lucky!

Wolf's Marine

Anyone feeling nautical in the Southwest Michigan area knows of Wolf's Marine in Benton Harbor. They have a large supply of teak from overstock and salvage sources. They also have a 'bargin bin' where you pay by the pound. I have used this source for many small teak projects. They also carry sheets of white marine-grade polymer. Its a great place to ramble around. They can be reached at 269.926.1068.

sources for teak wood

In buying Teak, unless you know something of teak, prices can be misleading. Burmese teak is for exterior while plantation(central american) should only be used for furniture and interiors. The oil content is substancially different.Burmese about 40% higher, concequently longer life around water. Price is based on how the company purchases teak, specific teak lengths & widths are substancially higher, with lengths shorter than 6'less desirable, cheaper. you might try http://www.woodworkerssource.net/ they run specials on shorts.Good teak is not cheap. I run a custom woodworking shop,I know.
