The winter of 2001, I installed a through the hull depth sounder. Last summer it worked great. A nice to have addition. The sounder housing is glued to the bottom of the hull, filled with mineral oil and the sound is mounted into the housing. To seal the sounder mount I used the old favorite 3M-5200. Now, I have found the mineral oil has softened the 5200 and leaked out. So I have to clean everything up and reseal the sounder housing to the hull. Any recommendations on a sealant that will contain mineral oil? Thanks

Good old silicone

I have used a similar arrangement to mount a piece of large hose to hold the liquid and the transducer. Mine was mounted in a bead of ordinary "bathtub caulk" silicone. Be sure to allow at least 16 hours for the silicone to set before use, and be doubly sure that the previous oily filler is completely removed from the parts and the hull. I suggest using some Chlorox followed by a rinse of water, then complete drying. If you're feeling generous, you can completely cover the bottom of the attachment with the silicone because it transmitts the sound very well and won't evaporate or leak. Just a thin skim of oil or water will allow the final perfect fit bewteen the hull and the transducer.
