Want to put a new 4 stroke in my tempest and those familiar know that this boat has a well for an Outboard. Looks like a 5 horsepower, 4 stroke will be tight. Manufacturers are pretty stingy with detail drawings. I have beel looking at Nissan, Mercury, and Honda. Any experience in this area would be deeply appreciated. Thanks

motor that fits

I have placed a new nissan 6 hp in my engine well and it works great. I did have to take about one inch of fiberglass out of the back of the compartment so the back of the motor wouldn't hit. Was worried about cutting it at first, but it looks and works great. Good luck! Rick

Thanks MIke

Did you buy a long shaft 4 cycle? Did you find the interference at the hatch cover opening? I really appreciate your help. My opening is 21" fore to aft.

oday motor

Yes, I bought a long shaft. The short shaft is out of the water when people are on the bow. The hatch cover doesn't hit the motor cover. The motor handle will hit the hatch cover unless you push the handle towards the stern. It really hasn't been a problem. If you have any questions about fitting you should do what I did and tell the motor dealer the problem and ask if you can try the motor out in your well to check the fit. Several dealers were glad to let me do this. Good luck, Rick PS If you know anyone near the Chesapeake Bay who wants to buy a '67 O'Day Tempest in fair to good shape (not the motor)let me know. I am donating mine to the church. R
