Recently obtained a 1981 Hunter 22'. Seems to have possible stress fractures in mast just below the spreaders. Looking to replace it before an accident happens. Any ideas where to find one? Does it have to be an exact match? Thanks. FDC

Keep searching the web and you might find a used one. You can try sparcraft, they build masts for a lot of different boat builders. Or contact Hunter directly and see if they can tell you who made your mast.
Can you modify a similar mast to work, sure you can, but it might not have the same cross section as your current one, so it might not sit on your mast step properly or your current rigging might not be the correct length.

Just a thought - I saw a guy successfully repair an aluminum mast that broke in half just above the spreaders. He cleaned up the ends and welded an aluminum collar that wrapped around the mast - about a foot in height. Worked great.
The only problem is most welders cannot properly weld aluminum, so you need to find a specialist that does that kind of work.
So depending on the nature of the damage this may be an option - it has to work out a lot cheaper than a replacement mast.

I hope "obtained" = free and even then this might not be a good deal for you. Especially if the rest of the boat is pretty clapped out too. The cheapest route is to fix the old mast. You are unlikely to find that exact mast. Not enough H22's around. If it was a Catalina 22 it might be possible. At least the length is short enough that transporting a new mast section (or a larger one you could cut to size) is possible. Hunter might even be able to help you out. Most manufacturers bought the mast set up from a supplier like Kenyon.
A TIG welder can repair it easily. Just call around or visit a weld shop and ask the right questions. Then trailer boat or pop mast on van,truck with red flag and it'll take them 10 min. tops. I know from experience!
