Another potential wrinkle in the halyard replacement

can be whether the mast sheaves were originally configured for wire/line halyards. Rope sheaves have a more rounded surface whereas wire sheaves are a lot thinner in circumference per load, generally. Line could jamb up in a wire sheave. I need to check this on my old rig.

Sheaves

Hi CalebD; That is certainly true for many older boats. In this case, Ken indicated the boat was a Catalina 30 MKII. The sheaves in the top of the mast are sized for 3/8's line. fair winds Dave

Thanks for responses.

We all learn from this type of question. Thanks to all for your replies. I will go with factory standard. I will add a few feet in case I need to use the halyard for MOB hoisting. On a related note, I have a device that came with my boat that is specific for purpos of MOB retrieval. I will post a picture of that later. Ken
