I have a 1978 30 hunter with a YSM 12 Yanmare engine need a Handle to manual start because my starter motor is not working wondering if any body had one to sell.

Make one yourself

My suggestion, if you can not find one through this post, is to make one. Take a half-inch drive socket that fits over the post. Saw two notches in the socket to match the engine post. Snap handle into socket for the crank and you are good to go. I replaced my YSM 12 starter at the end of last season. Could not believe it cost me $565.00. Installation was two bolts and took less than fifteen minutes. It was not a Yamar starter but was Japanese. You might want to try a tractor dealer that handles Japanese diesel tractors for a better price. Starting by crank is not an easy exercise, as you have to hold down the compression lever and crank at the same time. good Luck Ian s/v Meant to Be

take your starter to an auto electrical shop

Jon: Why don't you take your starter into an auto electric shop. They can usually be repaired. I have my doubts if you can start that one lunger with a crank even if you have the crank.

Starter

Do you have to remove any other parts before removing starter? JON

Careful

John, Should you decide to make one yourself as Ian suggested you'll need to be careful how you makes the slots in the socket. One side of each slot will have to be cut at an angle such that once the engine starts the handle in effect disengages from the drive pins on the shaft. If you don't, the handle has a good chance of spinning around and breaking your arm or worse. Best suggestion is to get the starter fixed:)

Buy or make one.....

You should be able to buy one from your Yanmar parts supply house if you have one close to you. I seem to remember one of the main Yanmar parts suppliers is around New York. Should not be too hard if you decide to make one yourself. The angled slots Captn Dare is referring to help the handle to slide off easy but don't help a bit when the darn things kicks backwards on a failed start. The shaft the handle fits onto only engages the main crank in one direction, you can actually grab it and stop it while the engine is running. I start my YSM-12 by hand all the time; no problem. The key is to have good engine compression and to get it turning as fast as possible before you dump the compression release. After a lot of practice I can do it by myself with no problem, but it is easier to have a second person work the release. Let me know if you can't find one and I'll get dimensions and some pics of mine when I go by the boat.

manual start

With due respect to Ross B...Good luck with hand starting that engine. I have an older Hunter with a Yanmar SB8 and when I asked the previous owner about how easy was it to hand crank he just laughed. He was never able to start it with the hand crank and he is much younger than me, 6' tall and about 195 lbs. I tried it and realized it just wasn't gonna happen. After reading the manual, I learned that the crank is for priming the fuel line after replacing the fuel filters. e.g.- you engage the compression release and crank the handle about 30 times to pull the fuel up to the injectors The old Renault 9 hp (on some old hunter 27) had a rope starter that you wound around the crankshaft pully. You could actually start it like that.
