I am buying a 1999 hunter 260 wing keel and am wanting to add a GPS / depth finder to it. Any reccomendations? I would like to get a in hull transducer so I don't have to drill a hole in the hull. Anyone have info they wanna share?

Thanks in advance!

I put a Garmin 541s on my 1983 Hunter 31 about two years ago. I like it a lot. Great visibility in bright light even, it auto adjusts to night lighting. It has an internal antennae. I have never had a problem with it getting a GPS signal. You have to buy the transducer separately, it's installation is pretty straight forward. It is NEMA 2000 but will also do NEMA 0183 . It is not the latest Garmin model these days but there are still a few new ones for sale. Gets me around, the Texas coast just fine. The Homeport program is worth buying. You can create waypoints and routes on your computer and transfer them via data card to and from the GPS.

Ouch...... They are proud of that thing. I'm looking for something that is a little cheaper on the pocket book.

Yup, I know it. BOAT = Bust Out Another Thousand!

Just looked online, wow they went up from two years ago. I paid like $450 or so plus the transducer. Don't know what kind of sailing you do, but the iPad, iPhone has some pretty good aps with charts that you can get pretty cheap. See Practical Sailor for reviews.

Didn't even think about that. It's all inland sailing! I will still need to get a depth finder though. Maybe a uniden qt 206

I was looking at the fish finders but I couldn't find one that used a in hull transducer vs one that used a transom mount. I really don't care for a transom mount.

I recently got a Garmin 50s echomap, $400 without transducer. I picked the transducer that I wanted, with a speed wheel. You can choose the thru-hull transducer for this model that suits the environment or features you are looking for.

I installed a Lowrance GPS / fishfinder. It's works out great for the 260 gives track . Speed in knots. Water temp . It has a transom mounted transducer that I prefer. The fewer holes you drill under the waterline the better . Mount it between the rudder and the engine mount and you won't notice it.

I have installed a variety of transducers in several boats using epoxy ( I use West Systems). Build a dam bigger than the transducer out of play dough. Pour in enuff epoxy to create a level surface. Let it set. Mix up a small batch. Pour in enuff to wet the entire surface. Set the transducer in the film of wet epoxy and secure in place. Be sure not to whip bubbles into the epoxy. Other folks report success using caulking. Never tried that.
