Recently acquired a 1980 Hunter 27' with a missing forestay and jib. Does anyone have the dimensions/specifications for a replacement forestay? Thanks

I'm always leary of using factory specs or measurements of other people's boats when looking to replace riggin on a 30 year old boat. There is a fair chance that your boat or theirs may have been modified along the way. At first it would seem a simple matter to take some measurements and apply the formula for a Right Triangle to determine the length in question but taking percise measurements would not be easy and may not yield adequate results. If it is in your budget I would suggest you hire a rigger. This perhaps may be the time to evaluate the whole riggin and perhaps avoid a mishap in the near future. In any instance the forestay will have to be fabricated on site. You could raise the mast using a line or a halyard as a temporary forestay. I would attach the top of the forestay wire to the mast fitting and then raise the mast. Once I pre-tightened the shrouds and backstay I would strech the headstay wire to the deck fitting and depending on the stay adjuster to be utilized I would cut the wire to the desired length. The h27 is a masthead rig so there is no significant rake. Remember that new wire will strech over the first couple of months so you would not want to have any slack that could not be taken in by the adjuster.

Benny:

Typically if you purchase rigging from someone like Seco South, they will have swedged fitting for the mast and you would use Norseman fittings at the deck level. Some owners may want to take this on themselves, but others may decide to pay a rigger to install all of this fot them.

It is hard to beat their prices, so I would suggest that anyone thinking about doing this give them a call. These guys are professionals and do more re-rigging these days for Hunters than they are doing the new boats for Hunter.

What are you looking for in a jib? I have quite a few used hank on jibs that came with my 27, I might have something for you. Let me know and I will look through what I have.

Steve, I agree but if you cannot supply adequate measurements to have the headsaty fittings swaged at a shop then it would be best to have it assembled at location.

I will go through what I have this weekend and let you konw, I would guess something around a 110 would work on the bay. I have no first hand knowledge of sailing on the bay, if someone has a better idea let me know.
