I could use a few suggestions for a large (>1in) digit depthsounder something maybe 4 or 5 in/sq. My old datamarine has finally seen it's end. thanks for the ideas. redfish

Look at Navman
I did the same kind of search two years ago when my new to me 88 O'Day 302 came with no depth instrument. As we get older, we need those larger digits on the screen! I bought a Navman combo speed/depth meter. It works well. It's a little tough to read at an wider, oblique angle -- but if looking dead on, it's easy to read. FYI.

I also had a depth/knot meter installed on my first boat - an O'Day 240. The thruhulls on my 240 were installed under the front v-berth forward of the keel. On the 302 they're under a seat in a compartment just left of the centerline of the boat. I didn't install either of them -- something about drilling a hole in the hull that bothers me! But after seeing the second installation, I'd be more likely to try it myself next time.

I have an '82 hunter 25, which draws 4'. Originally I used a digital depth sounder, which worked adequately, but when it got water damage, i replaced it with a garmin fishfinder 90 from west marine. i mounted it on my cabin bulkhead, it has alarm, and a digital readout, but what is nice is that it displays the area under the boat with contour and displays the bottom makeup which is great for anchoring. for $99, it is a great tool in a 5"X5" package.

transducer placement
I place the transducer for my depth sounder in front of the keel on the center line. the new transducers are much smaller now than 10 years ago and require very little fairing where they meet the hull, most important is that you drill the hole a little larger than the shaft and coat the sides of the hole with epoxy or polyester resin to seal the sides of the hole so that you do not let water into the spaces in the laminate and get blistering or freezing in the winter

with the "shoot thru hull" ducer is what I got when my depth sounder went out. Ducer is just sitting in a baggy filled with water in the bilge just forward of the mast. Works great and you can adjust the size the digits on the sceen. Oh yeh, I have it bulkhead mounted.
