I have just purchased a 85' Hunter 40. I am moving up from an 81' H30. The 40 has 6, yes 6, batteries on board. My 30 had 2 batteries. There are 3 battery switches as well. One of the former owners was an engineer, and he installed this and diagramed it as well. As I have just gottent he keys, I have not had time to go over the diagram, but I do know that I will need a book to help me understand a system this complex. Can any of you recommend a book that will explain multi battery 12 volt systems like this? Thanks!

I wonder

If he didn't set it up like the system described in the West Marine Catalog. It has a seperate switch for house, start and both. I can't remember the details but it basically allows you to turn on the starting and house switches and then leave them on without fear of draining your starting battery. Check out the electrical section in a WM catalog

There are a number of books there that could be useful. I have not used any of them. The West Marine article is a good sourse as already mentioned. Paul

Nigel Calder bible

Nigel calder has writtend a very good book on this and other systems: "Boatowner's Mechanical & Electrical Manual: How to Maintain, Repair, and Improve Your Boat's Essential Systems" by Nigel Calder. Amazon.com will provide you with details how to order this book.

Read the 12 volt bible

I did start with the 12 volt bible. It is a good book, and I learned a lot, but it seems like it is based on a boat like my 30 (2 banks, 1 battery per bank, 1 switch). I would like to learn more about multiple battery banks and the differences between series and parallel wiring, pro's/con's etc. Thanks

Along with Andre's recommendation about Nigel Calder's book, I really like Charlie Wing's "Boatowner's Illustrated Handbook of Wiring". Very clear diagrams and compelling writing style. Best, Trevor

Are your batteries all 12 volt ?

Square - Perhaps your batteries are 6 volt, connected in series to give 12 v / pair. Some people, Don Casey among them, recommend using 6 volt golf cart batteries in series to give a relatively low cost, high capacity battery bank. Better look at your boat ( and the circuit diagram you mentioned ) and , if necessary, refer to the texts mentioned in the other posts. Assuming the boat is wired as per the cct. diagram, I'd say you're a lucky man.
