Hey all - I cam across this neat little lantern found in the Overton's catalog. Its not only a rechargeable lantern that is an ideal way to save your batteries – it has a remote to turn the light on and off. This would come in handy hanging off the end of your boom at night when on the hook. I am not sure what the operating distance is but it’s probably that of a remote-key for your car. A great feature to have when leaving or approaching your boat at night with your dingy while on the hook! I saw something similar to this in Boatworks recently where they had a remote system wired into spreader lights. This seams like a quick and cheap solution to the same problem. Depending on the operating distance – it might even be a good way to locate your boat at night if you hoist it up high enough. Just thought I would post - Rob http://www.overtons.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?r=view&i=75768&pdesc=Rechargeable_Lantern_With_Remote_Control

Neat light

Rob, Thanks for highlighting this - I love gadgets, especially fairly inexpensive gadgets! :) The only concern I have is the comment "The energy saving fluorescent U-tube can deliver continuous lighting for up to 8 hrs." - Makes me think that you'd have to have a new bulb if you left it on all night long (?) 8 Hours

Rob, I bet that the reference to 8 hours means that battery life is 8 hours.

battery life

I think thats 8 hours of battery life. But when you heading off your boat - say for a night out or dinner - you could hang the light off your boom - get in your dink - turn off the light from the dink...then turn it back on upon approach using minimal battery power.

Sam's Club

I got a lantern at Sam's Club that has the florescent(sic) bulbs but also has LED's around the base that give off a lot of light. You can use either the main bulb or the LED's. The LED's also work off a wind up handle on the top. Have left it on all night in the cockpit and it's still on in the morning. The unit also has a built in radio that will also work off the winding handle. It comes with an ac and dc charger. Pretty neat piece of equipment.
