boom vang attachment fixed on underside of boom came off twice on a jibe and then bearing onto a close reach. could anyone tell me a more satisfactory way of fixing the vang to the boom. original attachments seem none too sturdy as from the factory on our 1989 26.5' moderate breezes in both cases and reasonable care in changing point of sail. ed.

It would be valuable to know exactly which piece of hardware failed. but, you also have to figure on a 10 year old boat that there's been some corrosion. Is there any evident corrosion on the broken hardware or any other paert of the assembly? Chances are just replacing the broken hardware will do the trick. I don't recall reading about a chronic prolbem with 26.5 vangs. You may want to post this in the Smaller Boat forum to see what other 26.5 owners have to say.

Boom Bail
Ed, I wasn't aware that vangs came as standard equipment. Was yours attached to the boom by a U shaped bail or with a pad eye? I used a stainless boom bail for my 25.5, mounting it by drilling a hole through the boom and attaching the bail with a 1/4" stainless bolt. It's still solid after 7 years. West and JSI have them.
