They were completing the Lexington to PHYC race on Sunday, they raced to Lexington on Saturday.unless they really were trying to sail to Lake Huron and thought they could get to the East faster than they could.
I believe they were attempting to get toward the Canadian side to get out of the way of the laker, they are just past the Bluewater bridge and winds in that area get swirly, out on the lake on Sunday that would have been a close hulled tack. The channel markers are apparent later in the video, the laker could have easily held its course and stayed on the US side of the channel which runs right up to the US shore. When the video pans out you can see how much bend is in the river at that point and it appears the freighter was clearly in the upbound lane of the channel which makes we wonder if there was a down bound laker no shown coming in from the lake and the Cuyahga was moving to the starboard to allow clearance.
