BTW, on the east coast, I believe only a couple of stores, in Annapolis and Florida IIRC, offer the extra services.

So are the lower shrouds, indeed, 1/4 inch?
If he did not see the original shroud, that is different than if he looked at it, estimated the wrong price then caught the pricing error. Either way, I'm surprised he honored the price based on the 3/16, but did the work in 1/4 as long as it was discovered before work was started. I think that shows they are trying to please the customer- regardless of how the work may have ended up. They may well say you tightened the tension too much, but it would also seem the hole through the spreader base was way too big if the shroud fitting passed through it also.
Are you saying the metal end of the shroud pulled THROUGH the cupped socket AND through the spreader-base casting?

If you end up looking for another supplier IMO you could do worse than to contact Catalina Direct (http://catalinadirect.com/). They're out of Sacramento so not close in, but they seem to know their stuff from the little I've dealt with them..
