I recently acquired a Hunter 19 1981- 1983. Having been a wooden boat sailor for many years, I am not familar with self bailing cockpits. I see one drain plug in the transom, but there is also one under the boat (center) that drains the bilge in the cockpit. Does this stay open or is it plugged when boat goes in the water?

Welcome!!!

Welcome! Welcome! You have just joined an elite group of boat owners, the 1981-83 H19. If my info is correct they only made about 100 of these boats and info. about them is scarce, mainly from other owners. Did your boat come with an owners manual? If so there are about four other 80's H19 owners that would love to get a copy. Hard item to find. Ok, The drain in the cockpit is there to drain the cockpit of rain water or seas coming over the sides of the boat. It doesn't do this very fast but it does work. I think it is more efficient when under way as the flow over the hull creates a suction. You may see a bit of water coming up into the well the hole is in, but that will occur when heavily load, and I've never seen any significat accumulation. I built some floor boards for mine so it is not much of an issue. I did it more for looks then worry of wet feet. Launch it and don't worry about it. I had the same question when I got my boat and just launched and never had a problem. You may want to check the condition of the hose, caulking, and clamps as this is a through hull fitting and any leaks will fill your bilge. Feel free to contact me with any other questions. If I can be of help I would be happy to do so. For the next month I will have only sporadic access to a computer and will be away from the boat, but I'll try. Glad to hear from another 80's H19 owner. Later, Nicholas

No plug.

I guess the simple reply is: no plug in bottom, one plug in transom. Good luck, Nicholas

I've got one too!

I've also have an 1982 Hunter 19. I've had it since spring. I do admit a little envy over the newer 19 foot Hunters but I can tow this one with my 4 cylinder Jeep. I've replace the shrouds, fixed some gelcoat and made hinged doors for the cabin. The doors cost a lot in material but open up the cabin a lot. My wife and I have spent a couple of weekends on the boat. A tarp makes the cockpit an extended cabin. Have you ever came close to rolling the boat? I pushed it pretty far but don't know if it will act more like a ballasted centerboard boat or an unballasted boat. dmontg6700@aol.com
