Many years ago (OK, decades ago) I was in the US Navy aboard the USS Yosemite (AD-19), a destroyer tender. While on a Med deployment we had a lot of ships to repair with not so much space to dock. So we held a Navy raft up:

We use to deploy with the USS Midway. The closest we ever got was close enough xfer fuel and supplies. The process of shooting lines across to work up to heavy cables was interesting. A lot of supplies came over by chopper. Even though we weren't Navy, it was all hands to get supplies onboard and stowed.

The Quarterdeck on the 1st few ships must have been a busy watch.

That’s a lot of tin cans!

Was on a sub tender myself. (Gilmore AS-16) We had plenty of dock space in Key West, so we only had one sub at a time alongside. Usually to load torpedos, food, or a major repair.
